BRADENTON, Fla. - The Gold Nuggets traveled more than 600 miles to visit their Sunday opponents, but the Xavier women's tennis team showed no signs of road-weariness, defeating New College of Florida 5-2.
Xavier (13-5), currently ranked No. 6 in the NAIA polls and No. 1 in the ITA ratings, swept the doubles matches with the No. 1 pairing of McKenna Wheatley and Maja Brnic winning 6-4, the No. 2 team of Asadah Ma'at and Valeria Ortega winning 6-1, and the No. 3 pair of Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales winning 6-0.
Four singles players earned a point for the Gold Nuggets.
Wheatley defeated Camila Cardona-Carballosa 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, Sabikova defeated Emilia Schulte 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Ortega defeated Alexandra Sibrikova 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Ma'at defeated Gia Rizzo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
XULA will have little time to enjoy its win. They face a huge challenge, a showdown with No. 4. Southeastern (Fla.) Monday morning at 10 Eastern, 9 Central.
