XULA women defeat No. 4 Fire in Top-10 clash

LAKELAND, Fla. - The XULA women's tennis team picked up its biggest win of 2026 here Monday morning, downing No. 4 Southeastern (Fla.) 5-2 in non-conference play. 

Xavier (14-5), the No. 6 team in the NAIA, picked up the doubles point, then won at No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 singles. 

The pairing of Maja Brnic and McKenna Wheatley defeated Martina Picardi and Alessia Ciampi 7-6 (2) at No. 1, while Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales defeated Isabella Garces and Irene Parigi 6-1 at No. 2. 

Brnic defeated Picardi 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, a match that pitted the No. 8-ranked Brnic against the ITA's 28th-best NAIA player. 

Meanwhile, Wheatley defeated Garces 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2, Sabikova defeated Ciampi 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and Asadah Ma'at defeated Aurora Compagnucci 6-4, 4-6. 6-1 at No. 6. 

Xavier stays on the road for its next match, a neutral-site contest with No. 5 Lindsey Wilson in Memphis.
