Gold Nuggets outduel SCAD-Atlanta to punch ticket to national quarterfinals

MOBILE, Ala. - Xavier Women's Tennis showed its mettle Wednesday, defeating a tough SCAD-Atlanta 4-3 in the NAIA National Championship Round of 16. 

The Gold Nuggets, who are ranked No. 5 in the nation, face No. 4 William Carey on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the NAIA Quarterfinals. 

On Wednesday, XULA (19-7) fell behind after dropping the doubles point, but the team rallied in a big way to take 4-of-6 singles matches to secure the win.

The moment of the day came courtesy of Valeria Ortega, who outlasted Manuella Eloundou 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(5) at No. 4 singles to break a 3-3 tie and send the Gold Nuggets forward. 

XULA also got wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles. 

Senior McKenna Wheatley defeated Anastasija Stojanovic 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while Ana Sabikova defeated Carmine Becoude 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3, and Asadah Ma'at defeated Joann Leijten 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. 

This is the eighth consecutive year in which the Gold Nuggets have reached the NAIA quarterfinals.
