Gold Rush fall to St. Thomas in home opener

METAIRIE, La. - The Xavier men's soccer team suffered a season-opening disappointment Friday morning, falling 2-0 in nonconference play against St. Thomas (Fla.). 

Xavier (0-1) got off 8 shots, two of which were on goal, while St. Thomas (1-0) had 15 shots with nine on goal. 

St. Thomas goals in the 20th and 79th minutes proved the difference on the scoreboard, but there were promising flashes for the Gold Rush. 

New keeper Lenno Schmidt, who replaced longtime primary keeper Breno Zanolla, played all 90 minutes and made 7 saves. 

Next up for XULA will be a home match against Wiley on Aug. 23, which will be the 2026 installment of the Go Gold game. Opening kick is slated for 7 p.m. at Metairie's Lafreniere Park.
