Gold Rush blank Wiley in non-conference play

METAIRIE, La. - The XULA men's soccer team shook off its season-opening stumble against St. Thomas (Fla.) here Sunday, storming to a 5-0 win over Wiley in non-conference play. 

Xavier (1-1) kept the pressure on Wiley (0-1) in the first half, scoring three goals in the first 19 minutes of play.

Diego Larralde struck first with a goal in the 12th minute that came courtesy of an assist by Antonio Merola. 

Four minutes later, Ellison Haynes put a pass from Bruno Abdallah in the back of the net and, at the 18:43 mark, Diego Vazquez scored on an assist from Haynes.

By the time the match reached halftime, the Gold Rush had gotten off 9 shots, with 4 on goal, while allowing Wiley just 3 shots, with none on goal. By game's end, Xavier had produced 18 shots, 7 of which were on goal, while Wiley had produced 5 shots, with 1 on goal.

Haynes, a freshman from Lafayette, Louisiana, had quite the match, finishing with a goal and two assists. His second assist came early in the second half, when Haynes connected with Adam Cervantes in the 48th minute. 

XULA's final goal came in the 53rd minute from sophomore transfer Cole Spady with an assist from Caleb Evans. 

The Gold Rush return to action Wednesday with a match against former conference foe LSU-Shreveport. First kick is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Metairie's Lafreniere Park.
