XULA blanks Faulkner on road

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Xavier women's soccer team continued its winning ways in SSAC play Thursday, defeating Faulkner 3-0.

XULA (3-2-1, 2-0 SSAC) kept steady pressure on the Eagles (1-4-2, 0-2), getting off 17 shots and 11 shots on goal while limiting Faulkner's opportunities to 4 shots, with 2 on goal.

That attack yielded an early positive result, an 8th-minute own goal by Faulkner. Xavier followed with a pair of goals in the second half to secure the win.

Julia Gurgel scored her 7th goal of the season, an unassisted effort in the 59th minute, while Alina Paiz scored an 88th-minute goal with an assist from Eduarada Queiroz.

Freshman Aylin Yildirim logged a complete game in goal for the Gold Nuggets, picking up her second win of the season and first clean sheet of her career.

Thursday night's contest was the first of four consecutive conference road matches for Xavier. The next step on that journey will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, when XULA plays Mobile in a battle of teams currently receiving votes in the NAIA polls.
