Gold Rush defeat former national champions on road

DALTON, Ga. - The Xavier men's soccer team picked up a massive conference road win and one of the most noteworthy victories in program history here Friday, blanking an always-strong Roadrunner side 2-0.

It is difficult to overstate the significance of the win for the Gold Rush (4-3-1, 2-1-1 SSAC), who received votes in the most recent NAIA poll. 

Not only did XULA defeat a Dalton State (6-3-2, 3-2-0 SSAC) team that is also earning votes in the national polls, the Gold Rush bested a team that has earned its way to five consecutive NAIA national championship finals-site tournaments and was the winner of the 2024 NAIA national championship. 

The win also kept the Gold Rush in the mix in the 2026 Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season title race. 

Offensively, the star of the night for Xavier was sophomore striker Cole Spady, who scored unassisted goals in the 4th and 66th minutes to give Xavier the necessary points on the board.

Defensively, the Gold Rush put on a great performance, limiting the Roadrunners to 13 shots, 2 of which were on goal. Keeper Lenno Schmidt was the equal of both shots on goal and posted his fourth clean sheet of the season. 

XULA has a big challenge in its next match, a Sunday visit to No. 7 Life in Marietta, Georgia. First kick is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST.
