MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's men will seek a fourth consecutive berth in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships when it plays Coastal Georgia at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush (12-7), ranked and seeded sixth, had a bye in Tuesday's opening round. Coastal Georgia (11-6), ranked and seeded 11th, won 4-of-6 singles matches to rally for a 5-4 victory against 22nd-seeded Asbury.
Both Xavier and Coastal Georgia qualified for nationals with at-large bids.
The Mariners have no ranked singles or doubles players, but senior Erick Bermudez defeated 35th-ranked Ricky Keppeler of William Carey 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament April 18.
It will be the second meeting between the Gold Rush and Mariners. Xavier won 6-3 on March 7, 2014, in the opening round of the AUM Invitational at Montgomery, Ala.
Xavier is making its school-record seventh consecutive appearance at nationals and won in the second round each of the past three seasons.
The Xavier-Coastal Georgia winner will play third-seeded Vanguard or 14th-seeded Bethany (Kan.) in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Thursday.
