NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Xavier University of
Louisiana won three of the top four singles flights — including Antoine
Richard's victory against a top-10 opponent — but fell 5-4 to ASA Miami
in men's tennis Thursday.
The XULA women lost 9-0 to ASA Miami. Both dual
matches were exhibitions for XULA because ASA Miami is a two-year college.
So the results will not be included in the season statistics or records
of the Gold Rush (6-3) and Gold Nuggets (4-6)
Both ASA teams are ranked second in the National
Junior College Athletic Association. The men are 8-2, and the women —
who won the national championship a year ago — are 16-1.
Richard, ranked fifth among NAIA singles players,
won 6-3, 6-3 against NJCAA No. 7 Martin Mendoza. Also winning in singles
for the Rush was
Karan Salwan in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision against Kentaro Mizushima
and
Catalin Fifea in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Tin Chen.
Fifea and
Pierre Andrieu beat Mendoza and
Olivier Koeng 8-5 at the third doubles flight. XULA never led in the dual,
Sacha Modica's 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory against
Moses Micheal clinched for the Silver Storm.
"Tough all-around match for the guys," XULA coach
Alan Green said. "Had chances to win but didn't get it done. (ASA)
might end up being the JUCO national champs."
The Gold Nuggets failed to win a match against
ASA for the second straight year. Winning the most games for the
XULA women was
Charlene Goreau, who lost 6-1, 6-4 to seventh-ranked Yuliana Munroy at No. 1 singles.
XULA will conclude its Florida trip with
dual matches at St. Thomas at 10 a.m. EDT Friday. All four teams
are ranked in the NAIA. The Gold Rush are second and the Gold Nuggets are 10th.
The STU men are 19th, and its women are 22nd.
