JACKSON, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana split a pair of tennis
dual matches Monday at Jackson State. The Gold Rush won 4-0, and the Gold Nuggets lost 4-1.
Catalin Fifea won in doubles and singles for the Gold Rush (9-3), ranked second in the NAIA.
Fifea and
Pierre Andrieu clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory against Vishu Prasad and
Stylianos Gkontsaris. Fifea stretched his singles win streak to seven with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Fritz Jacobs at No. 3.
Moses Micheal and
Antoine Richard produced the other XULA singles victories. Michael beat Ryan Swanier
6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Richard clinched the dual on the first court with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 decision against
Alawi Andrey. Richard has a four-match singles win streak.
The XULA men have won nine of their last 10 duals, including two victories against NCAA
Division I opponents. Coach
Alan Green's men are 7-0 all-time against Jackson State.
In the women's dual,
Brandi Nelson won 6-2, 6-4 against Oni Jones on the third singles
court for the Gold Nuggets' only victory. The XULA women are 6-10.
Jackson State's women are 10-13, and its men are 6-19.
Both XULA teams will play William Carey at 11 a.m. Thursday at XULA Tennis Center.
