NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's men concluded their third
consecutive season without a home defeat when it beat William Carey 7-2 Thursday at XULA Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush (10-3), ranked second in the NAIA, have won 17 straight at home,
four this season. The streak includes five victories against ranked opponents and
five against NCAA Division I teams. William Carey (12-5) is ranked sixth in the NAIA.
William Carey's eighth-ranked women beat the ninth-ranked Gold Nuggets 6-3 and
stretched their winning streak to 11 consecutive duals.
Antoine Richard,
Moses Micheal,
Karan Salwan and
Catalin Fifea won in doubles and
singles for the XULA men. Richard clinched the dual on the first singles court
with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Vladyslav Ladygin. Fifea beat Hugo Robuchon 6-2,
6-0 for his eighth consecutive singles victory.
Karan Salwan, honored in a
prematch senior day ceremony, defeated Clement Fosse 6-0, 6-4 and teamed with
Tushar Mandlekar to beat Ladygin and Christian Hansson 9-7.
Mandlekar and
Adam Albrecht also were honored for senior day.
In the women's dual,
Yi Chen Pao won in doubles and singles for the Gold Nuggets (6-11).
Pao and
Lyndsey Clark won 9-8 (8-6) against Daria Veretennikova and Lorena Rouillon Jimenez
after trailing 4-0 in the tiebreaker. Pao defeated Veretennikova 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 1-0 (10-5)
on the sixth singles court.
Charlene Goreau got the other XULA victory with a 7-5, 6-3 decision against Aleksandra Grela at No. 1.
William Carey's women are 14-2.
Both XULA teams will travel to Pensacola, Fla., to play Columbus State at 9 a.m. Friday.
Columbus State's men are ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, and its women are eighth.
