NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana,
solidly entrenched as one of the NAIA's best tennis programs, will play
its first dual matches of 2020 this weekend.
The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets will play at noon Saturday
at XULA Tennis Center (3619 Pine St., zip 70125) against city rival Loyola.
The XULA men were ranked second, the XULA women third and the Loyola women 12th
in the NAIA preseason coaches polls.
Additional top-25 opponents on the XULA schedules are Lewis-Clark State, LSU-Alexandria, Mobile,
Tennessee Wesleyan and William Carey. NCAA Division I opponents will be
are Alcorn State, Jackson State, Nicholls, South Alabama and Southern Miss.
Alan Green is in his 17th season as coach of the XULA teams.
There are eight returnees from last season, five on the women's team. A year ago
the XULA men were NAIA national runner-up for the third time in four seasons,
and the women reached the semifinals for the fifth time in seven years.
The NAIA National Championships will be played at Mobile, Ala.,
for the 17th consecutive season. The Gold Rush will attempt to qualify for nationals
for the 12th consecutive year and the 12th time overall; the Gold Nuggets
will try to qualify for the ninth consecutive year, the 12th time in 13 years
and the 14th time overall.
