MOBILE, Ala. —
Santiago Perez defeated
Boris Klingebiel in a matchup of ranked singles players Thursday, and Xavier University of
Louisiana won two other matches against ranked opponents in a 4-1 Southern States Athletic
Conference men's tennis victory against Mobile.
XULA (4-6, 2-0), ranked 11th in the NAIA,
won on the road for the first time this season. It was XULA's second victory this season
against a ranked opponent; Mobile (5-2, 0-2) is No. 12.
Perez, No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA singles rankings announced
earlier in the day, won 6-2, 6-1 against No. 11 Klingebiel. Perez won for the fifth time in his last six
singles matches.
Juan Ramirez won twice against ranked opponents.
He and
Juan Varon clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory against No. 8 Klingebiel and Kevin Andrusch,
then Ramirez — winning on the road in singles for the first time since Feb. 19 —
defeated No. 32 Andrusch 6-1, 6-3.
Also winning for the fifth time in his last six singles matches
was
Shaikh Abdullah, who defeated Mike Lee 6-2, 6-1 on the second court.
Santiago Perez and Abdullah won 6-3 in doubles against
Lee and Aoi Kambara.
It was the first of four SSAC matches in three
days for XULA, which will play Friday against Blue Mountain at 10 a.m. and fourth-ranked William Carey at 4 p.m.
