XULA seeks share of Southern States title

        MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana defeated Blue Mountain 4-0, then lost 4-3 to NAIA No. 4 William Carey in Southern States Athletic Conference men's tennis matches Friday.
        XULA (5-7, 3-1), ranked 11th in the NAIA, can gain a share of the SSAC regular-season championship by defeating seventh-ranked Middle Georgia, the league leader, in a 10 a.m. Saturday match, also at Mobile.
        XULA led 3-2 against William Carey after sophomore Guillermo Coiras rallied for a 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 victory against Juan Pinilla Pulido at No. 6 singles. But the Crusaders (7-2, 3-1) won the final two matches; Alexander Grekul clinched with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory against Sebastian Perez.
        Santiago Perez, Sebastian's brother, defeated an ITA NAIA ranked singles player for the second consecutive day when he rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Leo Bresson on court one. Bresson was No. 2 in the national rankings announced Thursday.
        Shaikh Abdullah clinched against Blue Mountain with his 6-3, 6-1 No. 2 singles victory against Philippe Labbe.
        Middle Georgia, 3-0 in the SSAC, will conclude its league schedule in a 4 p.m. Saturday match against Blue Mountain. William Carey's SSAC finale will start at 10 a.m. against Blue Mountain.
