XULA climbs two spots to return to NAIA top 10

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis is back in the national top 10.
The NAIA announced Wednesday that XULA (11-9) moved up two spots to No. 9. XULA was No. 11 in the previous two polls after 80 consecutive appearances in the top 10 — a streak that began May 3, 2011, and lasted nearly 10 years.
Helping XULA climb were two victories this past week against top-10s Union (Ky.) and Cardinal Stritch in the IWU Invitational.
It's XULA's 113th consecutive appearance in the top 25 (streak began April 4, 2007) and 89th consecutive appearance in the top 15 (streak began Feb. 1, 2011). XULA's top-25 streak is the longest active streak in NAIA men's tennis.
XULA will play city rival Loyola (2-9) at 3 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament at Mobile, Ala. Start time was pushed back five hours because of rain. Venue will be Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center, the same site for next month's NAIA nationals.
