India Mastin ran 5,000 meters in 20 minutes, 32.4 seconds Friday morning to finish 278th out of 326 women at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park.
Mastin was XULA's only harrier to qualify for nationals.
Thirty-eight XULA women have crossed the finish line a combined 69 times in 15 appearances at nationals beginning in 2001. Mastin's time is No. 5 on that list and the fastest since freshman Maliya Vaughan finished in 20:06.05 in 2016.
Mastin's individual finish is the Gold Nuggets' highest at nationals since Vaughan placed 268th in 2016.
Lina May, a senior from William Carey, was the individual champion in 16:50.9 and was eight seconds faster than the runner-up, Huntington freshman Addy Wiley. Taylor University of Upland, Ind., 11th in team scoring a year ago, had four of the top 12 scorers and won the team championship with 50 points. Defending champion Milligan was second with 177 points.
Taylor and Milligan were 1-2 in the final coaches poll Nov. 7.
Mastin was 3:41.5 behind May, the smallest gap between a Gold Nugget and the NAIA champion since Catherine Fakler's XULA-record 2:12.71 in 2011.
