NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Megh Patel saved four match points in the second set Monday and rallied to defeat Espen Lagarde 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2 and clinch a 4-3 men's tennis victory at the University of New Orleans.
Patel won 11 of the final 13 games after trailing 5-2 in the second set.
Santiago Perez — No. 1 in the ITA NAIA rankings — Jacobi Bain and Juan Varon also won in singles for the Gold Rush, 12-5 and ranked fifth in the NAIA. It was the first time in four years that the Gold Rush won four singles matches against a Division I opponent.
Perez's 6-4, 6-3 victory against Marcel Volz gave XULA its first lead at 3-2. UNO's Max Heinzel tied the dual by beating Juan Ramirez 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, then Patel won to give the XULA men their fifth victory in their last seven duals against UNO.
"I'm proud of our guys and how they competed today. This was a total team win," 19th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said. "We finally fought through a match against a good team and won when the matches were close."
UNO, an NCAA Division I member, is 12-4.
Next for the Gold Rush will be a home match April 2 at noon against NAIA No. 6 William Carey at XULA Tennis Center.
