SHREVEPORT, La. —
NAIA No. 10 LSU-Shreveport completed a three-game Red River Athletic Conference baseball sweep of Xavier University of
Louisiana with 9-4 and 11-9 victories Saturday.
The Pilots (19-2 overall, 8-1 RRAC) extended their
win streak to eight games. The Gold Rush (6-10, 3-6) have dropped four in a row.
XULA's only lead of the day was in the second inning of the opener,
when
Dillon Cousin tripled to right center to score
Shane Goins.
RBI doubles by Cousin,
Zachary Elias and Damian Lantigua in the sixth inning cut the Pilots' lead to 6-4,
but LSUS pulled away again with three runs in its sixth.
LSUS led 10-1 through six innings in the second game,
but the Gold Rush scored eight times in the final three innings and produced the biggest inning
of the series, a five-run ninth that included
Jeremy Moore's two-run homer.
Cousin and Elias had two hits apiece in the first
game, as did
Trae Hall and
Zahid Acevedo in the second.
Miles Peterson hit an RBI triple in the second game.
Six of the Pilots' 20 runs Saturday scored on wild pitches.
For the series LSUS pitchers had a 36-15 advantage in strikeouts, but XULA freshman
Joseph Semien
struck out a game-high eight batters in the finale.
Next for XULA will be a 4 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader
at Tougaloo in Tougaloo, Miss. The Gold Rush will play host to RRAC leader Southwest (N.M.) in
a three-game series March 12-13 at Wesley Barrow Stadium. Southwest is 9-0 in conference
and a game ahead of LSUS and Louisiana Christian. XULA is in eighth place out of 12 teams.
