LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Xavier University of Louisiana and
Guillermo Coiras turned the tables on Middle Georgia in a 4-2 men's tennis victory Saturday at the GGC Spring Invitational.
The Knights were 2-0 against the Gold Rush a year ago, including a 4-2 victory in the championship match of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. But Coiras — 0-2 in singles against the Knights in 2021, including a three-set loss to Naufal Kamaruzzaman that clinched Middle Georgia's 4-3 regular-season victory — delivered the clincher this time: 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Kamaruzzaman.
XULA — 8-4 and ranked seventh in the NAIA — defeated a ranked opponent for the fifth time in 16 days and the third time this week. Middle Georgia (2-4) is 12th.
Next for XULA's men and women will be 2 p.m. duals Thursday against Olivet Nazarene at XULA Tennis Center. The feature matchup will be at men's No. 1 singles, where XULA's
Santiago Perez will play Francisco Faria, No. 2 in the ITA NAIA rankings. Perez is 10-0 in singles this season and, dating to last season, has won 13 straight and 18 of his last 19 decisions.
