NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana kept the pedal to the metal Saturday,
beating Texas College 10-0 and 24-3 at Wesley Barrow Stadium to complete
a three-game Red River Athletic Conference baseball sweep.
The Gold Rush outscored
the Steers 73-3 in the series and did not allow a run in the first 15 innings.
All three games were stopped early because of the 10-run rule.
First-game highlights:
•
Armand Daigre
was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs.
•
Deionte Norris hit a two-run
inside-the-park home run.
•
Michael Sonn hit
a two-run single.
•
Miles Peterson,
Jeremy Moore,
Shane Goins and
Trae Hall hit RBI singles. Hall hit
his with two out in the fifth inning to make it 9-0, and an outfield
error on that play scored Goins and invoked the mercy rule.
• Pitchers
Nigel Mayfield
and
Kedrick Edwards combined on XULA's second consecutive shutout. Mayfield, the starter, struck out seven in three innings.
Second-game highlights:
•
Mark Herron
had six RBIs, including a two-run homer and a two-run single.
•
Calabe Collins
was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. He reached base safely all five times.
• Hall hit a triple,
two doubles and had four RBIs.
• Hall, Collins and
Andre Lambert
scored four runs apiece.
• XULA pitchers
Andreas Palmer,
Colby Henderson,
Juwan Fitch and
Brad Jenkins combined for 11 strikeouts — five for Fitch
and two apiece for the others.
The RRAC's top eight teams will qualify
for its postseason tournament May 6-9 at Sterlington, La. XULA is in eighth place
with a 10-11 record in the league — 14-16 overall — and is four games
ahead of ninth-place Huston-Tillotson. The Gold Rush gained ground this weekend
on seventh-place Our Lady of the Lake, which is 11-9 in the league after going 0-3 at home
this weekend against second-place
LSU-Alexandria.
Texas College is 0-21 — all
games have been in the RRAC — and XULA became the most recent opponent
to produce gaudy numbers. The Steers have been outscored 492-14 this season, and they've
been shut out 12 times.
Next for XULA will be a 1 p.m. Tuesday
non-conference home doubleheader — two seven-inning games — against
Arkansas Baptist at Barrow. XULA will travel to fourth-place Texas A&M-Texarkana
for a three-game RRAC series Friday and Saturday.
