NEW ORLEANS —
Juan Varon defeated Theodor Preiswerk 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles Thursday
to clinch Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-2 men's victory against Southeastern (Fla.)
at XULA Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush (13-5), ranked fifth in the NAIA,
rallied from a 2-0 deficit by winning three three-set singles matches. XULA extended its home win streak,
which started in 2018, to 24 dual matches.
XULA snapped the seven-match win streak of Southeastern (10-5), which is ranked 17th.
XULA rallied after Southeastern
took a 2-0 lead on Victor Olivera's 6-4, 6-2 victory against
Juan Ramirez on the second singles court.
Santiago Perez, No. 1 in the ITA NAIA singles rankings, defeated Roy Stepanov 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.
Megh Patel defeated Federico Barbon 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 3,
and
Jacobi Bain gave XULA its first lead when he beat Diego Menendez 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
"We escaped with a win. This Southeastern team is way, way underranked,"
XULA head coach
Alan Green said. "We played a five-hour match with those guys, and during the first three hours it seemed
like we were going to lose. But once again our guys played like some
grown men out there and pulled out a tough victory. They made me proud
because we talk about these kinds of challenges all the time.
It was the second consecutive
match that XULA won 4-3 without winning the doubles point. The other time
was 17 days earlier at NCAA Division I University of New Orleans.
XULA's men and women will travel to
Mississippi for matches against a pair of NCAA Division I opponents: 2 p.m. Friday
at Alcorn State and noon Saturday at Jackson State.
