MOBILE, Ala. —
Juan Varon
defeated Hung-Ju Wu 6-1, 6-4 on the sixth singles court Wednesday to
clinch Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-2 men's tennis victory against Cumberlands
in the round of 16 at the NAIA National Championship tournament.
The Gold Rush (20-5), ranked and seeded fifth,
will play Indiana Wesleyan in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. CDT Thursday.
The Wildcats (40-4), ranked second and seeded fourth, defeated Southeastern (Fla.) 4-1.
Santiago Perez and
Juan Ramirez clinched
the doubles point for XULA. Perez and
Guillermo Coiras won in singles.
Also winning in doubles for the Gold Rush were
Jacobi Bain and
Megh Patel.
XULA defeated the Patriots (23-6)
for the second time this season. XULA advanced to the quarterfinals
for the ninth time and the first time since 2019.
"Today was a tough one for us," 19th-year XULA
head coach
Alan Green said, "but the guys stepped up and got the job done.
We played Cumberlands earlier this year, so we expected a battle.
They had a different lineup this time, which made them even tougher to beat. I'm proud of what we did today."
