MOBILE, Ala. — Juan Varon defeated Hung-Ju Wu 6-1, 6-4 on the sixth singles court Wednesday to clinch Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-2 men's tennis victory against Cumberlands in the round of 16 at the NAIA National Championship tournament.
The Gold Rush (20-5), ranked and seeded fifth, will play Indiana Wesleyan in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. CDT Thursday. The Wildcats (40-4), ranked second and seeded fourth, defeated Southeastern (Fla.) 4-1.
Santiago Perez and Juan Ramirez clinched the doubles point for XULA. Perez and Guillermo Coiras won in singles. Also winning in doubles for the Gold Rush were Jacobi Bain and Megh Patel.
XULA defeated the Patriots (23-6) for the second time this season. XULA advanced to the quarterfinals for the ninth time and the first time since 2019.
"Today was a tough one for us," 19th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said, "but the guys stepped up and got the job done. We played Cumberlands earlier this year, so we expected a battle. They had a different lineup this time, which made them even tougher to beat. I'm proud of what we did today."
