NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana's
Jacobi Bain won several end-of-season men's tennis
awards as a freshman in 2022, but no Red River Athletic Conference Player
of the Week honors. Those went to teammates who played higher in the singles lineup, eight awards in all.
But those teammates —
Santiago Perez,
Juan Ramirez and
Megh Patel —
are gone, and Bain, now XULA's No. 1 singles player, was announced Tuesday as the RRAC weekly winner
for Feb. 6-12.
Bain, from Nassau, Bahamas,
won in doubles and singles Sunday in XULA's only match of the week,
a 4-3 home victory against city rival Loyola. Bain and
Dedric Ray
beat the Wolf Pack's Hippolyte de Preville and Aubin Duchier 6-2 on the second doubles court,
then Bain won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 against Francisco Javier Arce Vieyra.
It's the second straight week that the Gold
Rush won the RRAC award.
Mathieu Strauss was honored for Jan. 30-Feb. 5.
Next for XULA, 3-1 and ranked fifth in the NAIA, will be
three matches in the Grizzly Invitational at Lawrenceville, Ga.:
1 p.m. Friday against Cumberland, 1 p.m. Saturday against Georgia Gwinnett and
10 a.m. Sunday against Lindsey Wilson. Times are Eastern. Cumberland was 13th, Georgia Gwinnett first
and Lindsey Wilson eighth in the NAIA preseason coaches poll, but new rankings will be announced Wednesday.
