Xavier University of Louisiana's
Nereo Suarez defeated Jarmo Perez Wienese 6-3, 6-2
Tuesday to clinch a 4-0 victory against Ottawa (Kan.) in the opening round of
the UTR NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship.
The Gold Rush (14-9), ranked eighth in the final
coaches poll and seeded ninth at the tournament, will play
eighth-seeded/seventh-ranked William Carey in the round of 16 at 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday
at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center. Admission is free for all rounds.
Ivan Vazquez and
Gabriel Velez beat
Ben Russell and Oscar Giorgio 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Suarez and
Jacobi Bain produced XULA's other doubles victory,
6-2 against Enzo Ceravolo and Perez Wienese. In singles, Velez defeated Ceravolo 6-0, 6-2,
and Vazquez beat Russell 6-1, 6-3.
XULA won for the 10th time in its last 13 matches.
Ottawa finished 18-8.
XULA was one of three schools
whose men and women won Tuesday. The others were Holy Cross (Ind.)
and Northwestern Ohio. XULA's women defeated Ottawa (Ariz.) 4-1.
