       MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana lost 4-0 Thursday to defending champion Georgia Gwinnett in the quarterfinals of the UTR NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship.
       The Gold Rush, ranked eighth in the final coaches poll and seeded ninth at the tournament, finished 15-10. It was XULA's 16th consecutive appearance at NAIA nationals, the school's longest postseason streak in any sport.
       Andoni Garmendia and Kamron McIntosh-Ross defeated
Pedro Maggi and
Artur Yakubov 6-2 to clinch the doubles point, and McIntosh-Ross ended the nearly 2 1/2-hour competition with his 6-4, 6-1 victory against Maggi at No. 6 singles.
       XULA's
Jacobi Bain and
Nereo Suarez, No. 4 in the ITA NAIA doubles rankings, led 5-4 against top-ranked, unbeaten Santiago Villarruel and Jeremias Rocco when the Grizzlies clinched. Suarez split sets with Luis Francisco Sampedro in an unfinished No. 2 singles match.
       The Grizzlies (18-2) will continue their bid for an 11th consecutive national title — they're 42-0 all-time in this event — at 1 p.m. Friday against Southeastern (Fla.) in the semifinals.
       XULA beat Ottawa (Kan.) and William Carey in the first two rounds to reach the quarterfinals for the 11th time in its last 13 appearances.
