MOBILE, Ala. —
Xavier University of Louisiana's
Nereo Suarez clinched for the second consecutive
day, and the Gold Rush defeated William Carey 4-3 Wednesday in the second round
of the UTR NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship.
The Gold Rush (15-9), ranked eighth in the final
coaches poll and seeded ninth at the tournament, will play
defending champion and No. 1 ranked/seeded Georgia Gwinnett in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. CDT Thursday
at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center. Admission is free for all rounds.
Suarez won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 against
Matt Shearer on the second singles court.
Jacobi Bain won 6-1, 6-1 on court one against
Islam Orynbassar, and
Artur Yakubov defeated Phil Louis Steinbichler 6-3, 6-4 on court four.
Yakubov's victory gave XULA a 3-1 lead.
Bain and Suarez clinched the doubles
point with a 6-2 decision against Steinbichler and Artur Ibragimov.
Ivan Vazquez and
Gabriel Velez produced the other Gold Rush doubles victory, 6-3 against Orynbassar and Ismoil Hayriddinov.
XULA ended the 11-match win streak of the Crusaders
(15-3), who were 2-0 against the Gold Rush during the regular season.
William Carey was seeded eighth and ranked ninth.
