LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis defeated Lindsey Wilson 4-0 Sunday at the Grizzly Invitational for its second victory in three days against a top-12 NAIA opponent.
The Gold Rush, ranked fifth in the NAIA, finished 2-1 in this event and are 5-2 overall. XULA is 3-2 against ranked opponents, including two victories against eighth-ranked Lindsey Wilson.
Nereo Suarez and
Guillermo Coiras won in doubles and singles. Suarez and Bain clinched the doubles point on the first court with their 6-2 victory against Sebastian Junqhanns and Ilyas Coichari. Coiras clinched in singles with his 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory against Anatoliy Voloshyn on the fifth court.
Coiras and
Dedric Ray won their doubles match 6-1 against Lucas Marques and Tiago Almeida. In singles, Suarez won 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 against Coichari, and
Julius Hell won 6-4, 6-1 against Junqhanns.
Bain and
Mathieu Strauss led in the third set against ranked singles players Jan Silhavy and Tiago Almedia when the Gold Rush clinched, and
Jered Wilson was headed to a third set.
Lindsey Wilson is 2-4 — all the losses are against top-5 opponents.
XULA's men and women will travel Wednesday to Hattiesburg, Miss., to play William Carey at noon. William Carey's men are ranked seventh, and the women are ninth.
