OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Ruben Busch defeated
Jered Wilson 6-4, 6-2 on the sixth singles court Friday to give third-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan a 4-3 victory against fifth-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana in the men's first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA National Indoor Championships.
The Gold Rush (0-1) will play the host, unranked Kansas Wesleyan (1-1), at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation semifinals. All eight teams will play three times in this inaugural event.
XULA won the doubles point but never led again. Gold Rush newcomer
Julius Hell made it 3-all when he defeated Zoilo Rios 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 on the fourth court.
Mathieu Strauss earned the other Gold Rush singles victory, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 against German Delcanto on court three.
Jacobi Bain and
Nereo Suarez clinched the doubles point with their 6-1 victory against Jesus Fernandez and Nicolas Cortes on court one. Strauss and Hell had XULA's other doubles victory, 6-1 against Gabriel Ortiz and Busch.
The other first-round winners: top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett, 5-0 against Kansas Wesleyan; fourth-ranked Northwestern Ohio, 4-1 against Indiana Wesleyan; and second-ranked Keiser, 4-0 against eighth-ranked Lindsey Wilson.
