PENSACOLA, Fla. —
Jacobi Bain and
Julius Hell
won in doubles and singles Friday to lead NAIA No. 9 Xavier University of Louisiana
to a 4-3 men's tennis victory against Southern Arkansas.
It was the Gold Rush's first victory against
a ranked NCAA opponent since a 5-4 decision at Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in 2018. The Muleriders (5-9)
are 48th in Division II.
Hell and
Mathieu Strauss clinched the doubles point
with their 7-6 (7-2) victory against Matthew Tennant and Adrian Gheorge. Bain made it 4-1
with his clinching 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory against Sander Jans on the first court.
Jans is 21st in the ITA D2 singles rankings.
Hell won 6-3, 7-5 against Tim Fischer on court three,
and teammate
Jered Wilson won 6-3, 6-3 on court six against Lluc Pasqual.
Bain and
Nereo Suarez won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles against Jans and Pasqual.
XULA will stay in Pensacola and play another ranked
NCAA D2 opponent, No. 7 West Florida, at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday.
