NEW ORLEANS —
The men of Xavier University of Louisiana gained a split of their season series
with William Carey when the Gold Rush won 4-0 Saturday at XULA Tennis Center.
It was the fourth victory of
the season for the Gold Rush (14-6) against a top-10 NAIA opponent.
The Crusaders (6-4) are seventh, and XULA is eighth.
In the other meeting this season — Feb. 28
at Carey — the Crusaders won 4-3, erasing a 3-2 Gold Rush lead and winning in three sets on each of the top three singles courts.
But XULA flipped the script this time.
Jacobi Bain defeated Ibrokhimjon Urinov 6-0, 7-5 on court one,
Julius Hell beat
Thomas Drapeau 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 on court two, and
Nereo Suarez clinched on court three
with his 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory against Noah Rockstroh.
In doubles, XULA lost on court two but
rallied to win the point when Bain and Suarez beat Drapeau and Jean Nicolas Leblanc 6-2, then
Dedric Ray and
Guillermo Coiras clinched on court three with their 6-3 victory
against Rockstroh and Anton Magnusson.
It was the first time in 13 years that XULA shut out William Carey.
"The first time we played Carey we lost a very close match which I identified as a turning point in our season.
And it wasn't a good turn," 20th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said. "We've played a very tough schedule to this point
and had some good wins and some bad losses. Today the guys showed up and played like men, and we exorcised
those demons from the last time we played them. I don't know if this means it's another turning point,
but we will keep playing and see where this ride takes us."
The Gold Rush have won 29 straight dual matches at home —
four this season — since a 5-4 loss to Carey on April 12, 2018.
Another ranked NAIA opponent, No. 17 St. Thomas (Fla.), will visit
the Gold Rush at 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Start time was moved up two hours.
The XULA women, ranked fourth, will play No. 11 St. Thomas at that same time.
