NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University
of Louisiana men's tennis, ranked eighth in the NAIA, defeated 17th-ranked
St. Thomas (Fla.) 6-1 Wednesday to extend its home win streak to 30 dual matches.
The Gold Rush (15-6) have not lost at home
since a 5-4 loss to William Carey on April 12, 2018.
Jacobi Bain,
Nereo Suarez,
Julius Hell and
Mathieu Strauss won in doubles and singles. Hell and Strauss clinched
the doubles point with their 6-2 victory against Lucas Ribas and Sebastian Mezo
on court two. Bain clinched the dual when he defeated Raul Safont Martinez
5-7, 6-2, 7-5 on the first singles court.
Bain and Suarez beat
Oliver Andersson and Carlos Vidal Montesinos 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Hell defeated Bernardo Tajada 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2,
Suarez defeated Vidal Montesinos 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3,
Strauss rallied for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (12-10) victory
against Jakub Federowicz at No. 4, and
Jered Wilson won 7-5, 6-3
against Mezo at No. 6.
XULA is 7-5 this season against ranked teams.
St. Thomas is 12-7.
Honored in a prematch ceremony was
Guillermo Coiras, the only Gold Rush senior.
The Gold Rush regular-season finale will be an April 15 noon exhibition
in Shreveport, La., against two-year Tyler Junior College at the LSU-Shreveport courts.
XULA will play host to an NAIA unaffiliated group men's tournament April 20-22
and attempt to qualify automatically for NAIA nationals.
