       MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's men's tennis season ended Thursday with a 4-0 loss to eight-time defending champion Georgia Gwinnett in the quarterfinals at NAIA nationals.
       It was the second competition of the day for the seventh-seeded Gold Rush (18-7). In the morning XULA defeated Middle Georgia 4-2 in a match that was halted by rain Wednesday during doubles.
       Alex Gurmendi and Dhakshineswar Suresh clinched the doubles point on the first court with a 7-5 victory against
Jacobi Bain and
Nereo Suarez. That was a matchup of the top two teams in the ITA NAIA rankings. Bain and Suarez are No. 2.
       The lone unfinished doubles match was on court three, where XULA's
Julius Hell and
Dedric Ray led 5-4 against Santiago Villarruel and Federico Bonacia, who are ranked ninth nationally.
       Mihailo Radosavljevic clinched for the Grizzlies (20-1) when he defeated Ray 6-2, 6-0 on the sixth singles court.
       The only XULA singles player to win a set was
Mathieu Strauss, who was at 1-6, 6-3 with 26th-ranked Villarruel on court four when Radosavljevic clinched.
       The Gold Rush are 20-14 in 14 consecutive trips to nationals, 0-5 against the Grizzlies.
       This was the seventh time in the last 10 attempts that both XULA tennis teams reached the national quarterfinals. Earlier Thursday, Southeastern (Fla.) defeated the Gold Nuggets 4-2.
       Georgia Gwinnett, the No. 2 seed, will play sixth-seeded Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m. CDT Friday in the semifinals.
