MOBILE, Ala. —
Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis won four singles matches Thursday
morning to rally for a 4-2 victory against Middle Georgia in the round of 16
at NAIA nationals.
The Gold Rush (18-6) will play
eight-time defending champion Georgia Gwinnett in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. CDT Thursday.
The XULA men reached the quarterfinals for the 10th time in their last 11 attempts.
Dedric Ray produced his second clinch of this postseason,
a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Mariano Jalif at No. 6 singles. Ray won the final three games.
XULA's
Mathieu Strauss won 6-0, 6-1 against
Adria Pratdepadua on the fourth court, and the Gold Rush took the lead for good when
Nereo Suarez beat Samyak Bajarchary 6-1, 6-2 on court three.
Jered Wilson made it 3-1 when he defeated Icham Tidjine 6-4, 6-0 on court five.
On court two, Gianfranco Germinara and Jalif rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the tiebreaker
to defeat
Julius Hell and Strauss 7-6 (7-5) and give the Knights the doubles point.
Suarez and
Jacobi Bain, No. 2 in the ITA NAIA rankings, won 6-0 on court one against
Bajarchary and Tidjine.
XULA defeated Middle Georgia for the second time this season.
The Gold Rush are 18-6 and seeded seventh. The Knights, seeded 10th, finished 14-7.
