HAMMOND, La. —
Xavier University of Louisiana, in its first-ever baseball game against
an NCAA Division I opponent, lost 22-5 Tuesday to Southeastern Louisiana.
The Gold Rush, an NAIA member, never led.
The Lions scored 11 times in the second inning, and the game was stopped
after 6 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Robert Robinson,
Dillon Cousin, Keshawn Wright and Zion Morris had one hit and one RBI apiece
for the Gold Rush (6-7). Alex Crews had an RBI. Cousin's triple to center field scored
Bennie Spady during a three-run fourth inning.
Bailyn Sorensen homered twice and had six RBIs for Southeastern (5-3).
XULA used six pitchers, and its final two —
Alexander Arnold
and
Kedrick Edwards — did not allow a hit or a run over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Attendance was 1,554, the largest
crowd to watch XULA baseball during the program's second era, which began in 2021.
Next for XULA will be a three-game
Red River Athletic Conference home series against Huston-Tillotson.
The Gold Rush and Rams will play at 5 p.m. Friday, then a noon Saturday
doubleheader. The venue will be Ned Eades Field at Northshore High School
in Slidell, La. — 33 miles from the XULA campus.
