CARTHAGE, Texas — LSU-Shreveport, ranked third in the NAIA, defeated Xavier University of Louisiana 2-0 and 7-0 Sunday in a Red River Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader.
LSUS moved the games 70 miles to an all-artificial turf facility because of weekend rain that made Pilot Field unplayable. But the campus field is expected to be ready for the 3 p.m. Monday finale of the three-game series.
XULA first-game starting pitcher Hunter Wheaton allowed one hit and walked eight in six-plus shutout innings against LSUS, which entered with a .308 team batting average and seven runs per game. Vantrel Reed's two-run homer to left-center field in the bottom of the eighth ended the opener.
LSUS first-game starter Isaac Rohde (6-1) allowed two hits, walked none and struck out 11 in a complete game.
LSUS second-game starter Draven Zeigler (6-1) also allowed two hits and walked none in a complete game, and he struck out 10. LSUS hit three sacrifice flies.
Cohen Boyd hit safely in both games for the Gold Rush. Miles Peterson had XULA's only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the third inning of the opener.
XULA is 8-13 overall and 3-10 in the RRAC. LSUS is 21-2 and 13-1. The Pilots have a 10-game winning streak.
