2024 Red River Athletic Conference standings
       WESTWEGO, La. —
Kimani Davis pitched a scoreless final four innings, and
Miles Peterson drove home three runs without a hit to help Xavier University of Louisiana grab an 8-4 baseball victory Saturday against Southwest (N.M.) in the opener of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series.
The Gold Rush (9-14 overall, 4-11 RRAC) and the Mustangs (14-15, 5-8) will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. CDT Sunday at Segnette Field. Admission will be free.
       Davis, who relieved starter
Hunter Wheaton to start the fifth, allowed three runs that tied the score at 4 in that inning. But Davis got stronger thereafter, striking out six and stranding five Mustangs on the bases.
Davis and Wheaton struck out seven apiece, and the 14 combined strikeouts are XULA's most in a game this season. Davis (2-4) earned his first victory since opening day Feb. 2.
Peterson hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning and RBI groundouts to shortstop in the sixth and eighth.
XULA had four extra-base hits, including two
Alex Crews doubles and
Zion Morris' leadoff home run in the fourth. Crews' first double scored
Robert Robinson, who also doubled, to put the Gold Rush ahead to stay in the fifth.
       Crews,
Cam Finn and
Alan Velez had two hits apiece for the Gold Rush.
Matt Adams, Finn's courtesy runner, scored three times.
Hayden Woods had two of Southwest's five hits, and teammate Carson Miller walked three times. XULA limited Carlos Jaquez-Munoz — who entered the game as the RRAC leader with eight home runs and 44 RBIs — to one single and no RBIs in five plate appearances.
XULA snapped a six-game losing streak and extended Southwest's losing streak to eight.
