Robert Robinson,
Deionte Norris and
Cohen Boyd combined for nine RBIs, and
Hunter Wheaton
pitched a complete game to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 12-1 victory against
Texas A&M-Texarkana in the opener of a Red River Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday.
The Eagles gained a split by winning the second game 9-3.
The teams will meet at noon Saturday at George Dobson
Field to conclude their three-game series.
XULA never trailed in the opener after Robinson
homered to score
Miles Peterson, who led off with a double. Robinson had four RBIs, Norris three
and Boyd two. Norris hit a two-run single in the fourth and homered with the bases empty in the seventh.
Wheaton threw 150 pitches in seven innings, allowed five
hits, walked 11 but continually worked out of trouble — and as a result TAMUT stranded 15 runners.
XULA's six extra-base hits in the opener tied its season high.
Alex Crews had three of the 14 Gold Rush hits, and Peterson, Boyd, Norris and Robinson had two apiece.
Peterson and
Dillon Cousin scored three times apiece.
In the second game, Boyd and
Skyler Roberts hit bases-empty homers for XULA,
but the Eagles built an 8-1 lead through four innings. The Eagles' Hunter Reid hit a two-run homer,
and Jonathan Rios went 4-for-4.
XULA won nine of its last 12 games
and during that time hit .345 and averaged 12.2 runs. The Gold Rush hit .245 and averaged 5.1
runs in the first 24 games this season.
