NEW ORLEANS —
Julius Hell won 6-2, 6-3 against Mauricio Trevino Velasco on the ssecond singles court Friday to clinch Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-0 men's tennis victory against Texas A&M-Texarkana in the semifinals of an NAIA unaffiliated group tournament.
The Gold Rush (13-10), seeded first in this event and ranked 10th in the NAIA, will play second-seeded and 23rd-ranked Our Lady of the Lake (16-7) for the championship at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday at XULA Tennis Center. The winner will receive an automatic bid to NAIA nationals, which will begin May 14 in Mobile, Ala.
XULA seeks its third consecutive championship in an unaffiliated group tournament.
OLLU defeated third-seeded Lewis-Clark State 4-0 in the first semifinal Friday.
It will be a rematch of the 2023 group final, which XULA won 4-3 after trailing 2-0. The Gold Rush defeated the Saints 4-2 April 4 at the LSUA Tournament in Alexandria, La.
Hell and
VanDer Woody clinched the doubles point when they defeated Felipe de la Carrera and Sebastian Ramanos 6-2.
Jacobi Bain and
Nereo Suarez earned the other doubles victory, 6-1 against Trevino Velasco and Andrew Otzenberger.
Suarez defeated Ramanos 6-0, 6-0 on court three, and Woody beat de la Carrera 6-1, 6-0 on court four.
OLLU's Kyllian Savary won in doubles and singles against Lewis-Clark State, and Luis Hernandez clinched with his 6-1, 6-1 victory against Daniel Tevez on court six.
