ATLANTA, Texas — A pair of three-run innings helped Texas A&M-Texarkana score a 9-3 victory Sunday against Xavier University of Louisiana in the finale of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference baseball series.
The Eagles won the series two games to one. XULA won the opener 12-1 Friday.
Next for the Gold Rush: 5 p.m. Wednesday at home against Jarvis Christian at Slidell High School's Tiger Field in Slidell, La.
XULA (18-19 overall, 11-15 RRAC) scored first —
Cohen Boyd's fielder's choice grounder brought home
Miles Peterson, who led off with his third triple of the season — but the Eagles (20-23, 17-10) tied it in the bottom of the first on Dakota Leopold's RBI single, then took a 4-1 lead in the second on RBI singles by Jarren Lewis and Jonathan Rios and Brandon Riley's sacrifice fly.
The Gold Rush chipped away — closing to 4-3 when
Robert Robinson singled home
Jayden Smith in the third inning and
Ben Adams' double-play grounder scored
Alex Crews in the fourth — but the Eagles pulled away with three runs in their fourth.
Winning pitcher Gage Mason (3-3) worked the first seven innings, allowing six hits, walking one and striking out five.
Peterson had a season-high-tying three hits, and it was his ninth multi-hit game this season.
The finale was moved to an all-artificial-surface facility at Atlanta Sports Complex after a Saturday rainout in Texarkana at George Dobson Field.
XULA remained in the eighth place in the RRAC, a game and a half behind seventh-place Southwest (N.M.) and one game ahead of ninth-place Jarvis Christian. The top eight teams in the standings will qualify for the RRAC Tournament May 2-5 at Sterlington Sports Complex in Sterlington, La.
