NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana scored in 7-of-8 innings Wednesday afternoon
and rolled to a 19-4 mercy-rule victory against SUNO at Wesley Barrow Stadium in the first-ever
baseball meeting between the longtime city and HBCU rivals.
All six of XULA's extra-base hits drove home runs.
Dillon Cousin hit a two-run homer,
Deionte Norris hit a two-run triple, and
Jayden Smith,
Robert Robinson,
Matt Adams and Cousin hit RBI doubles.
Norris and Cousin had four RBIs apiece.
Norris tripled home
Cohen Boyd and
Miles Peterson with one out in the top of the first
inning to put the Gold Rush ahead to stay.
Cousin's home run sparked a six-run eighth
that put XULA in position to end the game early.
Coby Guillory then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth — the freshman right-hander
retired all five batters he faced — to invoke the 10-run rule.
Both teams used six pitchers.
Jeremy Clark, the second
Gold Rush pitcher, was credited with the victory.
XULA's run total was a season high,
and the winning margin was the Gold Rush's largest since a 24-3 home victory against
Texas College on April 2, 2022.
XULA is 11-15, and SUNO is 10-15. This is XULA's fourth season of its second baseball era,
and this is SUNO's first season in this sport.
XULA will
resume its Red River Athletic Conference schedule with a three-game
series at LSU-Alexandria: 2 p.m. CDT Friday, then a noon Saturday doubleheader.
