THIBODAUX, La. —
Skylah Barton ran 5,000 meters in a career-best 20 minutes, 54.18 seconds Saturday morning to lead Xavier University of Louisiana women's cross country in the Nicholls Invitational.
Barton placed 40th out of 96 runners. Her previous best 5K was 21:02.08. Barton has been the Gold Nuggets' fastest finisher 10 times in her career, including seven of the past eight meets.
Also competing for the Gold Nuggets were
Kayla Garrett, 81st in 25:30.44;
Vanessa Oladapo, 87th in 28:59.81;
Ariyanna Medrano, 88th in 29:03.59; and
Kayla Jackson, 91st in 32:02.86.
XULA scored 346 points to place 12th out of 14 teams. NCAA Division I University of New Orleans won with 30 points, and Alabama was second with 53. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.
UNO's Sophia Wolf won in 17:57.41.
Next for XULA will be the Loyola Invitational Friday in suburban Marrero, La. The women will race 6,000 meters.
