CLINTON, Miss. —
Skylah Barton and
Kayla Garrett
were the top two finishers Friday for Xavier University of Louisiana
women's cross country in the Mississippi College Opener at Choctaw Trails.
Barton ran 5,000 meters in 21 minutes, 40.6 seconds
to finish 28th out of 89 runners. Garrett, a freshman, was 57th in 25:25.2.
It was the second time in as many meets this season
that Barton and Garrett ran 1-2. Barton has been the Gold Nuggets' fastest finisher nine times in
her career, including six of the past seven meets.
Also competing for the Gold Nuggets
were
Vanessa Oladapo, 76th in 29:47.5;
Ariyanna Medrano, 83rd in 32:14.0; and
Kayla Jackson, 84th in 32:25.0.
XULA scored 246 points to place 10th out of 10 teams.
Host Mississippi College of NCAA Division II won with 43 points, and NCAA Division I Louisiana-Monroe
was second with 60. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.
Mississippi College's Shana Sellers won in 19:07.8.
Next for XULA will be the Nicholls Invitational Sept. 28 at Thibodaux, La.
The women's 5,000-meter race will start at 8 a.m., followed by four miles for the men at 8:30.
