        LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Xavier University of Louisiana's Nereo Suarez defeated 2024 ITA Cup singles champion Santiago Villarruel of Georgia Gwinnett, but the NAIA No. 1 Grizzlies won 6-1 Friday in men's tennis.
        Suarez won 6-2, 0-6, 6-0 against Villaruel, who also was No. 1 in the ITA NAIA preseason singles rankings. Suarez is 37th. The first rankings of the spring semester will be announced March 13.
        The Grizzlies (6-0) won every other set. Luis Francisco Sampedro clinched the doubles point and the overall match.
        The Gold Rush (1-2) are No. 7 in the NAIA coaches poll.
        XULA's men and women will visit SCAD Atlanta at 10 a.m. EST Saturday, then drive home.
