Chase DeLoach pitched five shutout innings, and
Jayden Smith and
Jeremy Clark had two RBIs apiece Wednesday to help Xavier University
of Louisiana grab a 10-5 baseball victory against city rival SUNO at Skelly-Rupp Stadium.
The Gold Rush (5-17) will visit Texas A&M-Texarkana
at 2 p.m. Friday in the opener of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series.
DeLoach (1-0) worked out of a bases-loaded jam
in the first and during one stretch retired 12-of-13 batters. The only hit DeLoach allowed
was Peyton Strahan's two-out single in the fifth, but right fielder
Cohen Boyd threw out Strahan at second base.
Smith hit a two-run single during a four-run sixth
inning that made it 9-1. Clark hit an RBI groundout during a four-run fifth and an RBI double in the sixth.
Eric Griffin homered — his second of the season — with the bases empty in the second inning.
XULA snapped an 11-game losing streak. The Knights (12-10)
lost for just the second time in their last seven games.
