Gold Rush place 9th in opener

        NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana men's cross country finished ninth Friday with 269 points in the season-opening Battle for New Orleans at Lake Oaks Park.
        Freshman Ivory Montgomery was the first Gold Rush finisher. He ran 5,000 meters in 18 minutes, 28.34 seconds to place 64th out of 82 runners.
        Also competing for the Gold Rush were Collin Wright, 65th in 18:51.96; Lejaune George, 71st in 20:05.20; Jaheene Bell, 73rd in 21:35.79; Kamal Webb, 74th in 21:36.01; Kevin Bahena, 75th in 21:43.75; and Caydon Carpenter, 81st in 25:13.13.
        Tulane sophomore Bernard Cheruiyot repeated as individual champion in 14:08.53. The Green Wave had five of the first six finishers and outscored LSU 17-40 to repeat as team champion.
        XULA's men and women will compete next Friday in the Mississippi College Opener at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss. The men's 5,000-meter race will start at 6 p.m., followed by the women at 6:45 running the same distance.
