XULA family issues statement following tragic passing of Texas A&M-Texarkana student-athlete

Xavier University of Louisiana and Xavier University of Louisiana Athletics join with the many voices expressing heartfelt condolences to Texas A&M University-Texarkana following the tragic death of student-athlete Graycen Vargo. 

According to a release from Texas A&M University-Texarkana Athletics, Vargo, a distance runner for the Eagles, suffered a medical emergency and collapsed during the men's 3,000-meter race on Friday. He was given immediate medical attention on site before being transferred to a local hospital, where he passed away.

"The Xavier University of Louisiana Athletic Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, teammates, and the entire community of Texas A&M University–Texarkana following the tragic passing of student-athlete Graycen Vargo," Vice President of Student Affairs Curtis Wright said. "We are heartbroken by the loss of a young life during the Red River Athletic Conference Championships hosted by our campus. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved Graycen during this incredibly difficult time."

Wright continued, "Xavier Athletics stands in solidarity with the Eagles family and remains committed to supporting all impacted by this profound loss."

According to Texas A&M University-Texarkana, Vargo was a junior computer science major from Dallas, competing in his first year with the Eagles after previously participating in athletics at Jacksonville College. He was recently honored with the Eagle Excellence Award for Cross Country during the University's annual athletic awards ceremony. The Eagle Excellence Award is presented to student athletes who made a positive impact on campus, within their teams, and in the community while exemplifying strong character and academic excellence. 

 "Our thoughts are with Graycen's family, teammates, and friends as they deal with this unimaginable loss," Texas A&M University-Texarkana President Dr. Ross Alexander said. "Graycen was a respected member of the student body and a beloved member of the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. His presence will be greatly missed by the entire university community."

Texas A&M University-Texarkana Director of Athletics Ryan Wall said, "On behalf of the Eagle athletic department, I want to convey our heartfelt sorrow at the loss of Graycen Vargo. Our prayers are with the Vargo family and everyone who knew Graycen as they go through this difficult time."
