Rosa, Sisic make Gulf Regional doubles title match; 2 more in single semis

THIBODAUX, La. - Half of the remaining competitors in the ITA Gulf Regional Championships are members of XULA Men's Tennis.

On the second day of the tournament, which features NAIA athletes from Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, 2 of 4 singles semifinalists and a team in the doubles final wore black-and-gold.

Edilson Rosa and Fatih Sisic got an 8-2 win in their semifinal match against Loyola-New Orleans' Jett Nguyen and Luca Abati. The victory sets up a meeting with cross-town rival Dillard's Siddharth Arya and Tarique Bobia in the final.

In singles action, Christian Sanchez came from a set down twice to reach the semifinals. In the Round of 16, he rallied to defeat Sergei Haug of Our Lady of the Lake 2-6, 6-3, 10-4. Then, in the quarterfinals, Sanchez 6-7(3) loss in his first set to Loyola's Alfredo Gallegos to take the match 6-3, 10-1.

Martin Rivera will also compete in the singles semifinals, having defeated Texas A&M Texarkana's Alexi Khamrotau 7-5, 6-1 in the Round of 16, then besting Fedir Zalievskyi, another Texarkana player, 6-3 and 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Rosa and Sisic both advanced out of the Round of 16, but lost in ultra-competitive quarterfinals matchups.

Sisic defeated Artur Ibragimov of William Carey 6-3, 6-2 but lost to Arya 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 in a tightly contested quarterfinal. Rosa outdueled Bobia in the Round of 16, 6-1 and 6-3, before falling to Gallegos in the quarterfinals, 7-6(4), 3-6, 11-9.

The ITA Gulf Regional Championships conclude Sunday.
