SHREVEPORT, La. — LSU-Shreveport scored the first 17 points Thursday and never lost the lead in a 63-57 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
It was Xavier's fourth consecutive loss. Erica Turnbull had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Gold Nuggets (18-10, 10-5 GCAC), and Rynika Hebert had 11 points and nine rebounds. Jarryn Cleaves scored eight points before fouling out for the first time this season.
Janai Sells scored 13 points for LSUS (12-14, 8-8), and Edie Leonards had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Xavier outshot LSUS 45 to 42 percent from the floor, but the Lady Pilots had a 39-28 rebound advantage. Xavier outrebounded LSUS by 20 in the Nuggets' 69-60 victory at The Barn on Jan. 8.
Xavier, which began the day tied for second place with Mobile, dropped to fourth place, a half-game behind SUNO.
Xavier's next game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday at GCAC opponent Belhaven in Jackson, Miss. The Nuggets need one victory in their last three regular-season games to clinch a quarterfinal home game Feb. 28 in the GCAC Tournament.
