NEW ORLEANS — Tish Flowers scored 14 points Saturday,
including the go-ahead basket with 14 seconds remaining, in LSU-Shreveport's
48-45 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Xavier.
The Lady Pilots (20-2 overall, 10-1 GCAC), No.
21 in the NAIA Division I coaches poll, remained in first place in the
conference by a game over Loyola and snapped the Gold Nuggets' 27-game
winning streak at The Barn. It was the first LSUS victory in six attempts
at Xavier's facility.
Valerie Huizar added 13 points and Whitney Hollins
12 for LSUS.
LaTashia Wise, with 10 points, was the only
double-figure scorer for Xavier (16-7, 7-4).
The Nuggets didn't score after
Johnna Williams made
the first of two free throws to give Xavier a 45-44 lead with 2:33 remaining.
Jamien Arvie made the second of two free throws to tie the score at 45 with
58 seconds remaining, then the Lady Pilots rebounded a Xavier miss to set
up Flowers' winning shot.
Xavier's
Shayla Boyd missed a shot which would
have tied the score with two seconds remaining, but the Lady Pilots
controlled the rebound before Huizar made a free throw for the final points.
Xavier made 3-of-10 free throws three days after
a school-record 10-of-10 performance.
