NEW ORLEANS — Kailey Tuthill, Sabrina Stansberry and Samantha Worsham
rallied Loyola to a 25-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-6 women's volleyball victory
against Xavier University of Louisiana in the Hampton Inn Wolf Pack Classic at
The Den on Friday.
The Wolf Pack (16-7) defeated the Gold Nuggets (13-6)
for the second time in 10 days and remained unbeaten in 11 all-time meetings
against Xavier. This was the first time that Xavier and Loyola played
five sets, and it was the first time since 2004 that the Nuggets won a set
against their city rival.
Xavier's school-record 11-match road win streak ended.
The Nuggets had extended that mark with a four-set victory against
Union (Tenn.)
earlier in the day.
In the final three sets, Tuthill and Stansberry had eight kills each,
and Worsham served five aces. Stansberry also had five blocks during the comeback.
Tuthill finished with 12 kills, nine digs and four blocks.
Eva Allen had 11 kills, and Stansberry and Lauren Brand had 10 kills apiece.
Three Xavier players produced double-doubles.
Taylor Reuther had 18 kills and 12 digs,
Chinedu Echebelem matched her career highs of 14 kills and
17 digs,
and
Franziska Pirkl had 47 assists, a career best, and 10 digs.
Moira Kirk had 11 kills, seven
digs and four blocks,
CeCe Williams had six kills and a career-high-tying 12 digs, and
Jodi Chatters
had a career-high 21 digs.
The Gold Nuggets rallied from a 17-11 first-set deficit
and won the set after Brand's back-to-back attack errors. Xavier trailed 8-3 and
21-19 in the second set before rallying with four kills — Kirk had the clincher —
and two Wolf Pack errors.
But Loyola controlled the final three sets, outhitting
the Nuggets .218 to .099 after Xavier had a .247 to .168 advantage in the first two sets.
Xaveir averaged 12.3 errors in the final three sets after averaging 9.5 in the first two.
It was the third time in Xavier history that it lost
after holding a two-set lead. Entering the match, the Nuggets were 22-0 on the road
after winning the first set during Christabell Hamilton's two seasons as coach.
Xavier's next match will start at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Barn
against Tougaloo. Both teams are 6-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. It will be
Breast Cancer Awareness Night, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
